My visit to the Mystique Rameshwaram Temple, that relates to Ramayana

Rameshwaram temple is one of the most important temples in India dedicated to Lord Shiva. This Hindu temple (Rameshwaram temple) is considered as one of the most pre-historic temples dated back to 11th or 12th century as per the experts. The main attraction in this temple is the sacred "Shiva Linga", which is considered one of the twelfth Jyotirlingas in India and is said to have constructed by Lord Rama Himself during the Ramayana period. As you are already aware of Valmiki's epic "Ramayana", where Lord Rama defeated and killed the evil, Ravana, the importance of Rameshwaram temple stands out there.

According to the experts, while Lord Rama, his entire team (Vanar Sena), Lord Hanuman, Lord Lakshman, Goddess Sita, and others, were returing from the victory over Ravana from Lanka, Lord Rama thought of worshipping Lord Shiva in this place (currently where the Shiva Linga is installed inside the Rameshwaram temple). As such, He ordered His trusted disciple Lord Hanuman to bring the shrine of Lord Shiva from Mount Kailash. However seeing Lord Hanuman taking time to bring the shrine of Lord Shiva, Goddeess Sita started making shrine (Shiva Linga) of Lord Shiva from sands with Her hands and Lord Rama started worshipping the shrine. However, when Lord Hanuman came back to Lord Rama with Lord Shiva's shrine, He got hurt by seeing Lord Rama worshipping with sand. Henceforth Lord Rama instructed His devotees to worship the shrine(Shiva Linga) of Lord shiva bought by Lord Hanuman first and then the shrine made of sand. You will be surprised to know that the lingam bought by Lord Hanuman is called "Vishvalingam" and the Lingam which Lord Rama worshipped is called "Ramalingam", both of which resides in the Rameshwaram temple and are the main two shrines in this temple. Also, the ritual still gets followed like Vishvalingam is worshipped first and then the main deity "Ramalingam". One thing I forgot to mention that Rameshwaram temple is one of the Char Dhams in India among Badrinath, Dwarka, Jagannath, and Rameshwaram.

So, without wasting any more time, now I am telling my entire experience of visiting Rameshwaram temple within a short span of time during my stay in Rameshwaram. As I stated in my previous blog that I reached Rameshwaram at 3 PM (approximately) directly from Kanyakumari via cab with my family. I didn't book any hotel in Rameshwaram priorly as I thought I would be booking the hotel just before I reach Rameshwaram. So, accordingly, as I reached Rameshwaram, I booked a hotel nearby the beach that costs Rs. 800/- per room which was realy cheap. I didn't go for any high rated hotels as our plan was to leave the hotel on the next day. So, without wasting our time, we took a quick lunch and then took some rest till 5 PM when we again left for visiting Rameshwaram temple. But before that, one thing I like to add is that, the choice for food was very rare. The common food was Dhosa, Idli, and Sambhar, and if you want some non-veg items, you can opt for it with a higher cost. Okay, so at 5PM, we took an auto from the hotel and reached Rameshwaram temple within 10 minutes, that costs us Rs. 100/-. Before entering the temple, I was just viewing the outside temple structures and always thinking of the fact that once Lord Rama visited this place and worshipped the shrine of Lord Shiva with Goddess Sita, Lord Lakshman, and Lord Hanuman. You have to surrender your shoes and footwears to the authorities before entering the temple. Likewise we entered into the temple and I was completely speechless to see the unparalled view of one of the longest temple corridors, the Dravidian architecture styled huge walls, huge pillars made of sandstones, beams, and ceilings. The floor is completely made of solid marbles. When, I went inside the temple in the room where the "Shivalinga" lies, I was spellbound by seeing the internal structures of the room. I reached the room probably at around 7 PM and there were very less crowd at that time. The priests were about to complete the puja and I was hurry to have a single glance at the "Jyotirlinga" for which we came from West Bengal. There were railings in the form of serpents and you have to pass through the railings in order to reach the main view of the "Jyotirlinga" (Shiva Linga). But, I was fortunate enough to have the sight of one of the 12th Jyotirlings in India. I was speechless and spellbound to see that "Shivlinga" that relates the period of Ramayana. I was also fortunate as, my father also had seen the "Jyotirlinga" by walking through the sticks.

There is a sign board fixed on the wall of the temple and it's written over there that Swami Vivekananda visited the temple in the year 1897 and his remark is inscribed on that board
