Dow Hill, Kurseong| India's Haunted Hill Station | West Bengal
On 11th March 2024, I started my journey to one of the most mysterious places in India, Dow Hill, which is a small hill station, located in Kurseong, West Bengal, and is known for it's unparalleled scenic beauty having forest covered with gigantic pine trees, and a rumor of being one of the most haunted places in India.
Dow Hill is located in Kurseong district of West Bengal and it took for us nearly 1:30 hours to reach from Darjeeling. I had heard from many people, and social media that, Dow Hill is one of the most haunted places in India, but, I was not aware of the fact that, one day I would be visiting Dow Hill. So, finally while we were descending down the hill road from Darjeeling, there was a slight left turn that went directly into the Dow Hill road. As soon as the road to the Dow Hill started, the natural beauty of the pine forest around both side of the road, with no sounds of cars, or any other transports, reached our ears. The road was going upwards with uneven surface and our driver said that, the road which we were travelling, is being rarely used by common people. Believe me, one for a sudden moment, I thought of being surrounded by any supernatural power, as the road was completely empty with no trace of human beings, and, only could we see the pine forest along both side of the roads, but, our driver confirmed us that, we were still twenty minutes left to reach the Dow Hill. After few minutes, we finally reached the beautiful Dow Hill School that is affiliated to the I.C.S.E. Board and run by West Bengal Government. However according to the myth, the road that starts from Dow Hill School to the Victoria Boy's School, is said to be known as "Death Road". According to the local folks and the superstition, the locals claimed to have experienced paranormal activities within the range of the "Death Road", where locals also claimed to have heard sound coming from the forest. However, one we reached the beautiful Dow Hill School, we took several photos and couldn't even feel any such paranormal activities over there. After spending few minutes in Dow Hill School, we started going towards the Victoria Boys School, taking the so called "Death Road". I took the video from every angles while I was on the death road, but, couldn't feel any paranormal activity. But yes, one thing I can say that, if you come alone by this road (Death Road), even during the noon, you will sure to get googebumps, as, the entire area is very quiet, with only the noise of some birds or other animals around the forest.
So, finally I reached one of the most prestigious schools in India, the Victoria Boys School, which is one of the oldest schools in India standing over 100 years. According to the local folks, the paranormal activities exist in the entire area around the school, while some claimed to have seen a woman walking in grey cloth in the forest, while some claimed to have seen a school boy staring from the window of the school during the school holidays, and some claimed to have heard the sounds of the school boys playing around the corridor of the school building during the holidays. Having heard all the above haunted facts, I was eager to go inside the school premises with not a single minute rest.
Once I got off our cab near the gate of the Vitoria Boy's School, the entire area around me astonished me a lot. There were no houses, people anywhere around the school, except dense forest covered with pine trees. Just beside the school gate, there is a small house where 3-4 sisters were present, and they were the locals as being seen, and one thing I noticed that, just beside the house there is a small temple like structure for worship. I didn't know why there was a temple beside the school in the forest, but, anyhow, there can always be a temple anywhere. I don't know what you are thinking of, but, I like you to keep your thoughts with you.
Okay, so, finally I went inside the school campus, and believe me, right from the gate of the school, to, the actual school building, the area was so quiet and hardly you can hear any sound except of the birds', and, the dense forest around the school. I just kept on walking along the road towards the school building. All of a sudden I came across the church which is considered to be one of the oldest churches in India, which, doesn't run today. Common people are not allowed to visit the church and I saw only one room on the outer premises of the church where the local school guards seemed to have been staying over there for taking care of the church. One thing I must say that, if you see the church, you will be definatrly getting goose bumps as, it would give you a feeling of an outer world. So, as we stepped in the main gate of the school, the school gurad didn't allow us to enter the school as, the school was still going on. However I didn't leave any stone unturned. I asked the school guard about the paranormal activities, and he completely denied of all the haunted facts. So after clicking some photos, we came back to our cab, near the school exit gate. The real twist happened now, when I asked those 3-4 sisters about the haunted stories, who were staying just outside the school. When I asked about the haunted stories, one of the sisters was trying to say something, but, was forced to keep silent by the other sister. But when I tried to ask again and again regarding the haunted story, the sister said us one sentence, that just blowed my mind. She said that, "if any group of friends try to stay here, in the forest for few months, and if by any means, one friend dies, the other friends will die within a month." Hearing this, I couldn't resist myself to ask her more, but, she went away at that time. Thus, I gathered the experiences whatever I got from visiting Dow Hill, and stepped on our car to go back to Darjeeling.
Ultimately I can say that, I had not seen any paranormal activity around me when I visited Dow Hill, Death Road, and Victoria Boys School, but, felt something which I couldn't explain anyone. But what the sister said to me at last regarding the paranormal activity, I will not forget that in my whole life. But any how, I would say, there is no ghost or spirit in Dow Hill, as experienced by me, but, yes, you will definately feel some wonderful gestures. Also, I would suggest everyone not to directly go inside the forest area, as there might be many wild animals, present over there, and, it is also not advisable to go through the Death Road during the evening after sunset. So, plan your journey likewise and definately go to Dow Hill, to experience the natural beauty and of course the so called, haunted stories.
It is advisable not to go through the Death Road after 6 pm.
