An Inspirational story of comeback from Kidney Cancer| RCC
Renal Cell Carcinoma, (RCC), is one of the most common cases of kidney cancer and I am writing this blog as I have experienced this deadly disease in my family, where my father was affected with this disease.
My father is now 63 years old and he has been taking regular medicines for high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes since last 30 years. He didn't have any such diseases apart from high blood pressure and sugar.
In 2011, he was affected with Cerebral Stroke due to which he was paralysed on his right side and that took nearly 8 months to recover. After 8 months of his post stroke, he was quiet well and recovered from paralysis and could go to his office in his own. But he used to have lots of medicines for high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, medicines for neuriological pain, and other medicines for neuro. He successfully retired from his service in 2020. But, it was again in 2021, when he was affected further with brain haemorrage and that drastically deteriorated his health. Till now, he is unable to walk on his own after that post stroke in 2021.
It is about 6-7 months that I noticed some strange changes in his health. He was having frequent urination and sometime even abnormal urine. His health was also getting deteriorated like, he had become too much thin and weight certainly decreased. I thought that it might be due to some neurological disorder that my father's health was getting deterioarted. But, all of a sudden, I was feared and got realy nervous when my father did urine and said that the color of the urine was faint red. I quickly consulted to a general medicine doctor on the very next day and he suggested for routine urine test. There was presence of blood in the test report. Doctor then asked my father if he is having some pain while urinating, or pain in any parts of his body, but my father said that he was having no pain in his body. The doctor then suspected that the blood in my father's urine might be due to cancer. So, for further diagonosis, he suggested for some other tests and one of those tests was whole abdomen scan. On the very next day, I took my father to have those tests done as prescribed by the doctor. Meanwhile, I just forgot to mention that, my father was having blood in his urine not in all consecutive days, like, 2 days ago, he had got blood in his urine, while today there was no blood. So, without wasting time, my father did the whole abdomen scan and after 2 days I got the test reeport where it was mentioned that there was a 3.5 centimeter tumor growing in his right kidney and that tends to RCC. All of a sudden I was completely broken by seeing the test report. My father, who is already suffering from cerebral stroke, was also broken down after seeing the test report where RCC was mentioned clearly.
Without wasting time, I searched for some top urologists in Kolkata for further treatment. First I consulted with one of the urologist in the Calcutta Medical Research Hospital, Kolkata, but, unfortunately I was not at all happy with the doctor's words. I am not naming the doctor's name in my blog, but, he said that the tumor was in such a place in the right kidney, that, the right kidney needs to be removed and moreover, even after removing the right kidney, my father could go to coma stage, as he was already having stroke. I realy disliked the doctor's words and started searching for some other urologist in Kolkata. Thereafter I heard of one of the best Urologists in Kolkata, Dr. Abhay Kumar, who is currently the HOD of Urology, in Medica Super Speciality Hospital, Kolkata. I took an appointment of him and took my father to him. He studied my father's scan plate taking his time and mentioned us that the tumor is of 3.5 centimeter which is very small and he would try to remove only the tunor, keeping the right kidney intact. He said that he does robotic surgery and hence using robotic surgery, it might be possible just to remove the tumor and not the kidney itself. But he also mentioned us that since the tumor is in very critical place in the kidney; removing only the tumor might lead to high drainage of blood flow, which might lead to further brain haemorage/stroke for my father. Hence the doctor's first option would be going for partial nephrectomy and if there is high drainage of blood flow during the surgery, he would opt for radical nephrectomy(complete removal of the right kidney). But one thing he assured us that my father would not go to any coma stage after the surgery. This gave us some hope and he was realy so generous to speak to.
So, I admitted my father under Dr. Abhay Kumar in Medica Super Speciality Hospital, Kolkata. At the day of my father's robotic surgery, I was just praying to God to save my father's life. As soon as my father was taken to surgery room, I was feeling extremely nervous and just praying to God. Meanwhile just after 1 hour approximately, the nurses called me and said that the surgery was completed and it was successful. But unfortunately the right kidney had to be removed. Dr. Abhay Kumar came out of the surgery room and I asked him about the present condition of my father and he said that he would have probably removed only the tumor and not the entire right kidney, but, during the surgery, my father's blood pressure was reaching to 200 and sometime above 200, that, forced him to complete the surgery within a short time, and that was why, within 40 minutes, he removed the entire right kidney. Infact, Dr. Abahay Kumar mentioned that it was his fastest robotic surgery to remove an entire kidney within 40 minutes. After having stayed in hospital for 7 days, my father was released and till now he is okay. I am much thankful and shall remain highy grateful to Dr. Abhay Kumar and his assistant, Dr. Surojit for their excellent services and polite nature towards patient and their family. Finally Dr Abhay Kumar suggested my father to take adequate water intake in a day and avoid any junk foods. Other than taking adequate water intake in a day and avoiding any junk foods, there is no such restriction for my father.
Hence I am saying to all the viewers of my blog that if you or any of your family members/friends are having symtoms like blood in the urine with no pain, they must consult to any doctors for quick action.
